太郎の頭に,乙姫さまの別れの声がひびいてきました


�B　Taro timidly (lifted) the (lid).

太郎は、おそるおそる(玉手箱の)ふたをあけました。


�C　And (no) sooner (had) he done so when ---how strange!---white (smoke) billowed from inside.

すると,あらふしぎ,中から白いけむりがもくもく。


�DAnd in that (instant), young Taro (became) an old man (with) a long white (beard).

そして,若者だった太郎は,たちまちのうちに白いひげのおじいさんになってしまいました。


�EThat's right. (During) the few happy days Taro had (spent) in the Dragon Palace, (hundreds) of years had (gone) by on land.

そうです。太郎が竜宮で楽しい毎日をおくっているあいだに,地上では,何百年もたっていたのです。


�F(Gazing) vacantly up at the sky, Taro wondered (if) the beautiful world at the (bottom) of the sea had (been) only a dream.　Or was he dreaming now? (The)
more he thought about it, (the) (less) (certain) he was.

ぼんやりと,空をふりあおぎながら,太郎は海の底の美しい世界がゆめだったのか,いま立っているこの世界が夢なのか,よくわからなくなってしまいました。
