（０）えひめ丸補償、１６億円の和解案に被害者同意

愛媛県立宇和島水産高校の実習船「えひめ丸」の沈没事故をめぐり、犠牲者７人の遺族や救助された実習生ら被害者計３３人が委任した「県・被害者グループ弁護団」（畠山保雄団長）と米海軍が行っていた補償交渉は５日、委任者全員が弁護団の提示した米側との和解案に同意した。関係者の話では、補償総額は約１４００万ドル（１ドル＝１２１円、約１６億９４００万円）と見られる。（読売新聞）

HONOLULU---A U.S. Navy submarine（米海軍原子力潜水艦）collided with (衝突した) a Japanese
fishing training boat carrying 13 high school students and 22 others,
leaving nine people missing(９名が行方不明のまま) after the boat sank（沈んだ） off
Oahu（オアフ島沖で）.
The USS Greenville(United States Ship＝米国海軍（潜水艦）グリーンビル号) was on routine
patrol（定期パトロール中）18 kilometers off Oahu when it surfaced（浮上した）about 1:47
p.m. and its stern（舵＝かじ）collided with the fishing boat .....

０．森善朗首相は10日朝から横浜市のゴルフ場で知人とゴルフ。午前10時半過ぎに「事故発生」の一報がいったが、９ホールが終わるまでゴルフを続け、２時間後の午後0時54分、ゴルフ場を出発した。
東京都世田谷区の私邸にいったん帰宅、事故発生から５時間あまりすぎた午後2時12分、首相官邸に到着した。
１．Prime minister Yoshiro MORI had been playing golf with his friends
in Yokohama since morning on Feb.10 when the first piece of the news
arrived. MORI, however, continued playing till he reached as far as
the ninth hole and left the golf course at 12:54 p.m., when full two
hours had been wasted.
Mori stopped by at his house and it was after 5 hours when he at last
arrived at Prime Minister's Official Residence at 2:12. (Translated

（３）２．Yomiuri Shimbun: Students and crew（乗組員）aboard the Japanese fishing
training boat, which collided with a U.S. Navy nuclear submarine off
the coast of Oahu on Friday, felt a sudden jolt （突然の揺れ）beneath the boat（船底に）,
heard the captain order the life rafts to be lowered（船長が救命いかだを下ろすよう命じたのを耳にした）,
and jumped into the water from the boat.
In international telephone interviews with The Yomiuri Shimbun, they
described their experiences during less than 10 minutes between the
accisent and the boat sinking.
３. The Ehime Maru, a fishing training boat with 35 people on board,
left a Honolulu port at about noon Friday. The sky was cloudy and the
sea was moderately choppy (＝the waves were 「適度に」high). The students
and crew took turns eating lunch（交代で食事を摂った）aboard the boat, after they
finished coiling the mooring ropes(係留ロープを巻き終えてから）. The boat was then
about 18 kilometers off Honolulu, sailing in the direction of a fishing
ground （漁場に向け航行中であった）.
（４）４．Shuji YANAGIHARA, 48, a crew member who was eating his lunch with
three other crew in the ship's dining room, thought the boat had run
aground(座礁した)....
YANAGIHARA ran up a ladder（梯子＝はしごを駆け上がった）to a deck, where he heard someone
yell（誰かが怒鳴るのを耳にした）that the boat hit a submarine（（自分達の）船が潜水艦に当たった）, and
Captain Hisao ONISHI shout, "Put out the life raft(救命いかだを下ろせ). Everyone
abandan ship.(退船せよ)”
YANAGIHARA joined the crew of the Ehime Maru eight years ago. Since
then, he has made the trip to the sea off Honolulu on average of three
times a year.
（５）５．Yoshihiro YAMAMOTO, 55, an engineer who was on a break(休憩中) in
his cabin（自分の船室で）, said his books fell off their shelves（何冊もの本が本棚から落ちた）as
the cabin shook as if an earthquake struck the ship. Within a few minutes,
water was sloshing(水が足元までピチャピチャと迫り) about his feet. No announcement
was made, apparently because the electricity had failed（明らかに停電のせいで）.
His cabin was in complete darkness.
”I have seen a nuclear submarine a few times," he said. "But we have
no way of noticing submarines（潜水艦に気づく方法は無い）because they travel under
water. I am very anxious about my crewmates who are still missing(まだ行方不明の乗組員がたいへん心配だ)"
"Several minutes after the water level on our boat went higher than
my feet, it sank. I could not think of anything except escaping from
the boat."

Prime Minister Yoshiro MORI is likely to draw fresh criticism for continuing
to play golf after receiving news of Saturday's collision between a
Japanese boat and a U.S. Navy submarine in waters off Hawaii(ハワイ沖で),
according to observers(立会人).
At the time of the incident(「出来事」として、disaster, incident, eventの順に小さくなる；ジーニアス),
the prime minister was playing golf with friends in Yokohama.
Despite being informed at 10:15 a.m. of the accident between the Japanese
fishing training boat Ehime Maru and the USS Greenville, Mori chose
to stay at the golf course for some time.
He did not arrive back at his official residence until 2:13 p.m.---four
hours after the accident.
"I thought to myself that there was no use rushing back (to the official
residence) in a panic," Mori told reporters on Saturday night.
According to observers, Mori's actions raise questions about his personal
attitude towards the collision and the government's ability to respond
to a crisis.

Sunday with the fact Mori played golf after hearing of the U.S. submarine
mishap（不運な事故）that left nine Japanese missing（日本人９名を行方不明にしたままの）.
"I don't know how the prime minister first heard of it, but I think
he should have stopped playing golf immediately and returned to his
office," New Komeito Leader Takenori KANZAKI said on a Fuji TV program.
