１４歳のウォーカーは、ただおとなしくインターネットのサイト検索を楽しむ平凡な少年にすぎなかった。激しい感情をたたきつけるヒップホップ音楽の熱烈なファンという点も、普通の子供たちと大差はなかった。弁護士の父と母のもとで裕福に育った家庭環境も、他人をうらやむ必要などなかった。

それから５年後、あごひげをいっぱいに生やし敵意に満ちた表情でテレビ画面に登場したウォーカー氏の姿は、全米国民を驚がくさせた。彼の祖国「米国」の青年と銃口を向け合う「悪の化身」タリバン戦士に変身していたのだ。ＣＮＮとのインタビューで、彼は「聖戦（ジハード）に参加した戦士だ」と自己紹介し、「同時多発テロを支持する」と語った。

ウォーカー氏はどのようにしてタリバン戦士になったのだろうか。米ニューズウィーク誌最新号が、当事者や両親へのインタビューなど広範な取材を通じ明らかにした経緯はこうだ。

彼は１９８１年、サンフランシスコ近郊のマリンカウンティで典型的な白人中流階級の家庭の長男として生まれた。ビートルズのメンバーであるジョン・レノンにちなんでジョン・ウォーカー・リンドと名づけられた彼の成長環境は、非常に自由だった。両親は一時ウォーカーを学校に送らず、「ホームスクーリング」で教育、高校入学の年になってからは学生が自ら教科課程を決定するフリースクールに通わせた。

平凡だったウォーカーの人生は、１６歳の時に読んだ１冊の本により、誰も予期できなかった方向に向かった。黒人活動家マルコムＸの自叙伝を読んだ後、イスラム教に改宗したのだ。自らスレイマン・アル・ファリスと名を変え、あごひげを生やしてイスラムの伝統衣装をまとった。学校を辞めた彼の関心は、ひたすらコーランの教えを覚え、祈ることだった。後日、彼はイスラム学校の同僚に「徹底した自己中心主義で、家族と隣人をなおざりにする米国人に不満があり、その代案を平和と寛容の宗教イスラム教から見つけた」と改宗の動機を明かしている。

ウォーカー氏は１７歳となった９８年末、単身イエメンに赴いた。コーランの原形に最も近いアラビア語が残っていると考えたためだ。だがそこで、シーア派やスンニ派が争っていることに大きく失望したウォーカー氏は、ますます原理主義の論理にはまり、世の中を変革するための政治意識を芽生えさせていった。

さらに純粋なイスラム世界に憧れたウォーカーは昨年、パキスタン北西辺境州のバンヌー市にあるマドラサ（伝統的なイスラム学校）に移った。コーランの学習に熱中した彼は、今年４月友人の１人に「アフガニスタンに魅了された。シャリア（イスラム法）がどう適用されているのか見たい」というメールを残し、姿を消した。およそ７カ月後、彼の姿が発見されたところは、マザリシャリフのジャンヒ捕虜収容所。両親が言う通りなら「戦いなど一生できないようなおとなしい子」だったウォーカーは、ＡＫ４７小銃を自在に扱う戦士に変わっていた。

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President Bush said a videotape of Osama bin Laden purportedly bragging about the September 11 terrorist attacks will show viewers that he is guilty of "incredible murder."

That tape will likely be released Wednesday, a senior administration official said.

"For those who see this tape, they'll realize that not only is he guilty of incredible murder, he has no conscience and no soul -- that he represents the worst of civilization," Bush said Monday during a White House ceremony at which a menorah was lit in honor of Hanukkah.

Bush said the tape "just reminded me what a murderer he is and how right and just our cause is."

The White House didn't plan to release the tape Monday because it wanted a nongovernment translator on hand to reduce possible speculation that the government doctored the Arabic-language tape, the official said.

Bin Laden makes it clear in the tape that he had advance knowledge about the planning and details of the deadly attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, officials said.

He also claims the hijackers trained to fly the planes didn't know some of their colleagues were on board. Some only found out what they would be doing as they boarded the plane, the officials said.

Bin Laden jokes that some of the 19 hijackers of the four jets did not know they were going to die, but thought they were to assist in a more routine hijacking, officials said. (Full story)

• The first notes of the national anthem will sound Tuesday at 8:46 a.m. EST, three months to the minute after the first hijacked plane slammed into the World Trade Center. President Bush will lead that remembrance at the White House and has asked that similar ceremonies be held around the world. (Full story)

• Diplomats expect Britain to announce Tuesday it will lead an international peacekeeping force in Afghanistan. Although the force won't be composed of United Nations peacekeepers, diplomats say the Afghan leadership and contributing countries want the United Nations to approve the operation. The U.N. Security Council is expected to authorize the force later this week.

• The aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk, which has served as a floating base for special operations personnel in the war against terrorism, has left the waters off the coast of Pakistan, a senior Pentagon official said Monday. Some Army troops stationed on the ship have returned to the United States, while others have moved to other bases in the region, the official said. The United States now has two carriers conducting operations as part of the continuing bombing of Afghanistan.

• The man who served as the army chief of staff for the Taliban is among the small number of captured Taliban officials being held by friendly Afghan forces, a senior Pentagon official said Monday. The man, identified as Mohammad Fazal, is currently being held by the forces of Northern Alliance commander Gen. Abdul Rashid Dostum, the official said. Another Pentagon official identified a second prisoner, described as a "senior Taliban official," as Mullah Dadullah.

• Anti-Taliban forces on Tuesday made dramatic gains in the eastern Afghan mountains of Tora Bora where al Qaeda forces -- and possibly bin Laden -- are believed holed up in a labyrinth of caves. Eastern Alliance fighters had taken over a main al Qaeda base on Tora Bora and had given enemy fighters a "short time" to surrender. (Full story)

• CIA officer Johnny Micheal "Mike" Spann was buried at Arlington National Cemetery on Monday with full honors. Spann, a paramilitary officer with the CIA, was killed during the Taliban prison uprising at Mazar-e Sharif in northern Afghanistan on November 25.

• A memorial service was held Monday at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, for three U.S. servicemen who were killed when a U.S. bomb missed its target in Afghanistan last week. (Full story)

• A Marine detachment moved into the long-vacant U.S. Embassy in Kabul on Monday as Washington worked toward re-establishing diplomatic ties with Afghanistan. The embassy could house a new corps of American officials in the Afghan capital, where an interim government is scheduled to take power December 22. (Full story)

• In Moscow, Russian President Vladimir Putin welcomed U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell to the Kremlin and thanked the United States for its help in carrying out humanitarian operations in Afghanistan, especially in the area of the airport at Bagram. (Full story)

• The British prime minister's office said Monday that if bin Laden was captured by British forces in Afghanistan, he would be handed over immediately to U.S. officials. Downing Street released its position on the matter a day after two British officials indicated Britain would extradite bin Laden for trial in the United States only if assurances were given that he would not face the death penalty. • Fears of armed conflict for control of the former Taliban stronghold of Kandahar subsided Sunday with word of an agreement on the city's new leadership, anti-Taliban officials said. Gul Agha, a former governor of Kandahar province, will return to that position pending the approval of Afghanistan's new interim government, which assumes power December 22. (Full story)

• Ethnic Uzbek warlord Gen. Abdul Rashid Dostum will back Afghanistan's new interim government, according to a State Department official traveling with Powell. A few days ago, Dostum had said he wouldn't back the new government because his faction was not fairly represented.

• Delta Air Lines on Monday night evacuated two terminals and four planes at JFK International Airport in New York after a passenger found a four- to five-inch knife beyond security checkpoints at the airport. Delta said security removed passengers from four international flights and evacuated two terminals after the discovery. Dee Baker, Delta spokeswoman, said all passengers were required to go through security again after a thorough sweep of both the terminals and the planes.

７日、カンダハル陥落を祝う席でブッシュ米大統領は「ビンラディン氏とアルカイダ組織が壊滅するまで戦争は続けられる」とし、「この戦いは休戦や協定では終らず、米国と友邦、そして自由が勝利してこそ、終了する」と強調した。ビンラディン氏やタリバーンと折り合う可能性が全くないことを示したもの。

米軍は８日、Ｂ５２爆撃機を出動させ、ビンラディン氏が隠れていると推定されるトラボラ山岳地帯のメーラワ山周辺を空爆し、大々的な捜索作戦を展開した。これに先立ち、ここではビンラディン氏のテロ組織のアルカイダ軍と反タリバーン軍が激しく交戦した。

The U.S. Marine, which was dispatched in Kandahar, blocked the major roads in the mountainous terrain outer Kandahar by mobilizing helicopters and military cars, is searching for the al-Qaida members. Pakistan troops have intensified the reconnaissance flight through the armed helicopters in the borderline, along with the watch over those who enter Pakistan.


The U.S. has intensified the security in major facilities, such as White House, the Capitol, and the Pentagon, as a provision against the possibility of retaliatory terrorist attacks by the al-Qaida followers, while focusing on the search for bin Laden.
