ニューヨークＷＴＣの残骸から金塊回収

９月１１日の米同時多発テロで倒壊した世界貿易センター（ＷＴＣ）の残骸の中から先月３０日夜（現地時間）、トラック２台分の金塊が回収された。

米ニューヨークで発刊されるタブロイド紙「デイリーニュース」は、ＷＴＣ第５棟の地下トンネルで金塊回収作業が行われる間、散弾ライフルとピストルで武装したおよそ１００人と連邦要員が物々しい警戒を見せたとして、このように伝えた。


ニューヨーク市も、「ビルの倒壊現場から２億ドル（約２６００億ウォン）相当の金塊を回収した」としてマスコミの報道を公式に認めたと、ＵＰＩ通信が報道した。


銀行と金融企業などが主な入居テナントとなっていたＷＴＣの倒壊現場にどれだけの金塊が埋められているのかは正確に把握されていないが、カナダ系のノバスコシア銀行の場合、第４棟の地下金庫だけでも２億ドル大以上の金銀を保管してきたとされている。


ＵＰＩ通信は、他の金融機関も倒壊当時金塊を保管していたと主張していることから、残骸の中にはまだ相当な量の金塊が埋まっているだろう、と推測した。


金塊埋没地点が明らかになった今日午前からは少数の重装備技師を除いては立ち入り禁止となり、人夫の代わりに警察と消防隊員が直接金塊を掘り起こしてトラックに積んだ。


人夫の一人は、「現場に近づこうとする者がいたら、多分銃撃を受けただろう」と、現場の厳しい雰囲気を伝えた。

＜テロ大戦＞自衛隊の艦艇４隻、来週インド洋に派遣

米国のアフガニスタン攻撃に対する細部支援内容を決定するため、日本政府が早ければ来週、自衛隊の艦艇４隻をインド洋に派遣する予定だと日本のメディアが１日、報道した。

読売新聞は、この艦隊は護衛艦３隻、補給艦１隻で構成されており、自衛隊派遣の事前調査の意味合いがあると伝えた。この護衛艦隊には、対潜ヘリコプター搭載型で迎撃能力の高い護衛艦も含まれている。日本政府は、この艦隊の調査をもとに、早ければ今月中旬、米英連合軍の物資を輸送、補給する補給艦や護衛艦を派遣する予定だとしている。

Incheon's Biggest Headache May Be Access （仁川（インチョン）空港の最大の問題点は交通アクセス（電車・バス等の交通網確保））

The new Incheon International Airport may someday become a hub of air traffic in Northeast Asia, as officials hope, but ground transportation to the airport will be certain to cause some headaches, at least for the time being.

A single, 52-kilometer (32-mile) thoroughfare connects Seoul and the airport. A rail system from Seoul to the airport and a second bridge connecting the mainland with the airport island will not become available until 2005 and 2006 at the earliest. Getting to the airport will also require you to dole out a sizable amount of cash, whatever means of transportation you may choose.

By Car Those who choose to drive can enter the Incheon International Airport Expressway - the only road to the airport - through three entry points near Seoul: the Gangbyeon Expressway Junction and the Olympic Expressway Junction, where the express ways meet the Banghwa Bridge in western Seoul and the Kimpo Airport Interchange near the old airport. There are four more entry points on the way to the airport.

Be warned, however, that once you get on the highway, you cannot get off it anywhere between Seoul and the airport. Emergency exits do exist, however, for vehicle collision and other contingencies on the highway.

The toll will cost 6,100 ($4.75) won for a passenger vehicle. The airport authority said it would take about an hour to get to the airport from downtown Seoul, but considering traffic congestion and other contingen- cies, a more realistic estimate would be between an hour and a half and two hours, if not more. The speed limit on the highway is 100 kilometers per hour.

The parking fee at the short-term parking lot right in front of the passenger terminal is 1,200 won for the first 30 minutes. For every 15 minutes thereafter, you will be charged 600 won up to 12 hours. Between 12 and 24 hours, a flat fee of 28,800 won is charged. At the long-term parking lot farther away from the terminal, passenger vehicles will pay 1,000 won per hour up to 8 hours.

Between 8 and 24 hours, a flat fee of 8,000 won is charged. The same rates apply to parking for more than a day. A shuttle bus service operates between the long-term parking lot and the passenger terminal. Five buses cover the 10 kilometer route every 7 minutes. They depart and arrive from the curbside on the first floor, or arrival, floor.

By Bus You can also take advantage of various bus services to the airport. City coaches called jwaseok buses depart from different parts of Seoul. Korean Air also offers extensive bus services from major hotels across Seoul. The services offered by Korean Air and other so-called limousine services cost 10,000 won, while city coaches cost 5,500 won. There are a total of 45 bus routes connecting the airport with 19 cities around the country. From Seoul, there are eight city coach routes and 15 limousine routes. By Taxi You can grab a cab from downtown Seoul and get to the airport for about 30,000 won. But the cab drivers will probably ask you to pay 70,000 won so that they can cover the 12,200 won highway toll (roundtrip) and another 30,000 won to make up for revenue lost by having to drive back to Seoul without passengers.

If you feel this is wrong (as you should), you can call the airport authority to have the bad drivers permanently expelled from the airport. The number is (032) 743-1013. Tell them the license plate number of the taxi. The authority will verify the number with what they have on their unmanned camera. If the numbers match, the cab driver will be banned from the airport forever. While this may be only a post-facto solution, it will help minimize cases of rip-off.

Van services to the airport will begin in the first half of this year. Accommodation Major hotels in Seoul are accessible through the shuttle bus services offered by Korean Air and other companies. There are no large-scale lodging facilities near the airport. The Korean Air hotel under construc- tion will be completed in December 2002.
