１．さて、お楽しみ英作文・・・。Learning English is fun.


下線部（以下[...]部）を英訳せよ。（TAによる理想解答時間；１５分） （２倍の時間でやってみてもＯＫ）


文明は「誰もが参加できる普遍的なもの・合理的なもの・機能的なもの」をさすのに対し、文化は不合理なものであり、特定の集団（例えば民族）においてのみ通用する特殊なもので、他に及ばしがたい。つまりは普遍的ではない。


[（A)例えば青信号で人や車は進み、赤で停止する。この取り決めは世界に及ぼしうるし、現に及んでもいる。普遍的という意味で交通信号は文明である。]


[（B)逆に文化とは、日本でいうと、婦人がふすまを開ける時、両ひざをつき、両手で開けるようなものである。立って開けてもいいという合理主義はここでは、成立しない。]

２．For example, when the traffic (light) is (green), people and cars can go ahead. When it is red, they must (stop). People and cars all over the world (must) obey this (rule). The traffic light is a part of civilization (because) it is world-wide.




３．Let me show you one example of 'culture'. In Japan, when a woman opens a sliding door, she uses both hands on her knees. If you say, "You can more easily open the door in a standing position," then you do not understand the culture. It may be reasonable but it is against the Japanese culture.




４．いや、「センターリサーチ判定Ｃ」でも、通用する英語のほうが、ぐじゃぐじゃ読みにくい表現満載の「似非（えせ）英語」より、はるかに高得点が期待できよう。




５．「普遍的」、「合理主義」の２語を知らないことを前提に、英訳してみた。(TA)
