長文問題 Lucy was reading magazines in a bookstore in Sydney. Suddenly the salesclerk said in a loud voice. "Why don't you say something?I've already asked you three times!" How rude, thought Lucy. She looked up and saw a boy of her own age, slim and fair-haired. He was blushing and staring at the clerk. "Can I help?" Lucy asked politely. "Look," said the clerk, "all I want to know is his name and address so we can send some books to him." "Did you understand that?" Lucy asked the boy kindly. "Of course I did! I'm not stupid!" said the boy angrily. He took the salesclerk's pad and pen and wrote his name and address. Then he walked out of the shop. Lucy followed him and asked him what his name was. The boy did not answer. She asked again and he said his name was Glen. When she asked him if he had some difficulty hearing, Glen got angry. Lucy bought some chocolates and gave some to him. Glen asked if someone at school had told her about his hearing problem, but Lucy said no, they probably hadn't noticed. He said that sometimes he could hear, but the problem was getting worse. Lucy found that if she spoke clearly he could understand her. Glen asked Lucy if she had noticed the flags for the Captain Cook celebrations. He said that he must have been lonely as captain of his ship and that lots of great people must have been lonely. When they parted Glen walked quickly away, but then turned round to wave to her.
