One of the most notorious gunfighters of the Old West was Wyatt Earp. Born in Monmouth, Illinois, he died an old man in Los Angeles in 1929.

Earp was one of a clan of brothers. He drove a stage and worked as a bartender and eventually became a gambler after starting as a farmer. While working as a marshal in Wichita, Kansas, he was caught stealing money. He then moved to Dodge City, Kansas, and became a deputy marshal. Therehe killed his first man, George Hoyt.

In 1879 he moved to Tombstone, Arizona. His brother Virgil was the marshal and Wyatt became his deputy. They were tough lawmen, a fact that eventually led to the gunfight at the O.K. Corral where the brothers killed three men. Friends of the dead men later crippled Virgil and killed another brother, Morgan. In revenge Earp killed Frank Stilwell and Indian Charlie. With a posse after him Wyatt fled to Nome, Alaska, later drifted to San Francisco and eventually ended up in Los Angeles.

西部開拓期(the Old West)のもっとも悪名高い(notorious＝ノゥとーリアス)ガンマン（gunfighters）の１人は、ワイアット・アープであった。イリノイ州モンマスで生まれたワイアット・アープは、1929年高齢でこの世を去っている。

ワイアットは、アープ兄弟の1人であった。彼は農夫から身を起こし、駅馬車の御者(ぎょしゃ)、バーテンダーを経て、結局はギャンブラーになったのである。そしてカンザス州ウィチタで、保安官（marshal）を務めていたにもかかわらず、金を盗んで逮捕された。

その後、カンザス州ドッジシティに移ると、副保安官(deputy marshal＝deputy＝デピュティ)を務め、そこで初めての殺人を、ジョージ・ホィットを殺害した。


1879年、彼はアリゾナ州トゥームストゥンに移った。兄のヴァージルが正保安官に、ワイアットが副保安官になった。２人とも非情な（tough=”タフ”）な保安官（lawmen）だったので、それが原因で、ついにはOK牧場(O.K. Corral＝オゥケィからーュ)の銃撃戦（gunfight）となり、アープ兄弟は３人の命を奪ったのだった。

殺された男たちの仲間によって、ヴァージルは廃人（はいじん）にされ、もう１人の兄弟のモーガンも殺害された。すると、ワイアットはフランク・スティルウェルとインディアン・チャーリーを殺して復讐（ふくしゅう）を果たした。

追っ手を逃れてワイアットはアラスカのノーム似向かい、後にサンフランシスコに流れ、結局ロスアンジェルスで事切れたのである。
