　　Graham did not have a single friend in his class. Most children have at least a couple of friends in their class, so why is it that some children are so unpopular?

　　 What people look like, the country they are from, their religion, physical weakness, or even an unusual name can make them unpopular. Children who are not good-looking may try to make themselves more popular by making people laugh. Others may pretend that don't care, but in fact they are deeply hurt by their unpopularity.

　　The problem should be taken seriously by parents. It is not enough to simply move to another place. Children need to like themselves before they can except to be liked by others. We must try to repect our children and give them pride in themselves so that they will feel confident and know how to please others.

＜和訳＞

　グレアムは自分のクラスにたった一人の友人もいなかった。たいていの子供達は少なくともクラスに２、３人の友人がいるものだ。それではなぜ一部の子供達はそんなに不人気なのか。

　人々の外見、出身の国、宗教、肉体的弱点、あるいは変わった名前さえも人を不人気にする。見栄えがぱっとしない子供達は人々を笑わせることによって人気者になろうとする。他の子供達は自分達は気にしないというようなふりをするかもしれないが、実のところ彼らは自分達の不人気さに深く傷ついている。

　この問題は親によって深刻に受け取られるべきである。単に別の場所に引っ越すだけでは十分ではない。他人に好かれることを期待する前に、子供達は自分達を好きになる必要がある。私達は私達の子供達に敬意を示し、また子供達が自分に自尊心（プライド）を与えるように試みなければならない。子供達が自信を感じ、他人をどう喜ばせるかを知るようになるがために。
