ボランティアで海外からの留学生を支援をしています。アジアやアフリカの留学
生の家探しは大変だと感じています。
I support students from abroad on the voluntary basis. I've seen and
heard so many times that Asian and African students have difficulty
finding their apartments in Japan.
特定の国籍を挙げ、「友達をたくさん連れ込んでうるさい」「大声でしゃべる」
などと言われ、断られた例が何件かありました。日本人でも、うるさい人はいます。
国籍だけで決めつけるのは偏見ではないでしょうか。
Often landlords were ready to say 'No' to students of particular nationalities
when those students wanted to rent the apartment, saying that "Those
people will make too much noise when they gather round," or "They talk
too loud." Judging people not by individual but by their nationality
does constitute PREJUDICE!
不動産屋のあいまいな説明も誤解を招きます。ある不動産屋に「物件探しを考え
ておきましょう」と言われ、期待したものの、結局連絡がなくがっかりした留学生
もいました。相手を傷つけない言い方だったのかもしれませんが、微妙な言い回し
は留学生には理解が困難です。はっきりと分かりやすい説明の方が親切です。
In some cases ambiguous explanations by estate agents do bring about
misunderstandings. I know one student from abroad ,who received a reply
from some agent, "I'll give it some thought about your apartment." Of
course he heard nothing from the agent, which gave him all the more
disappointment. The agent may not have nothing against that foreign
student. However we'd better keep remembering that those 'indirect'
way of saying is almost impossible to have correct understanding of.
It is preferable that we should call a spade a spade.
